What’s Happening at AMAAS?

Celebrate Asian Heritage Month with CanAsian Arts On the Move!

Wednesday, May 29, 2024 @ 6-8PM MST | Online link coming soon | Free

Led by the CanAsian Arts Network and simulcast in cities across Canada, CanAsian Arts On the Move is a national multidisciplinary showcase for Asian artists. This program is in collaboration with the Alberta Media Arts Alliance Society in Calgary, Asian Heritage Society of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Festival Accès Asie in Montreal, InnerGenerational: Becoming Ancestors in Toronto, Pacific Canada Heritage Centre – Museum of Migration Society in Vancouver, and the Philippine Arts Council in Edmonton. 

The evening consists of performances/films by six Asian-Canadian artists, and Q&A sessions with the artists in attendance.

AMAAS will be presenting emerging media artist Lavounie Doan from Calgary. Lavounie Doan was born in Saigon, Vietnam. She is a media artist specializing in filmmaking/cinematography, sound design, photography, animation, and illustration. Living in Calgary, AB (Mohkínstsis/Treaty 7 Territory), Lavounie received her BFA in Time-based Media Arts and a Board of Governor’s Graduating Student Award from the Alberta University of the Arts in 2023. Her research focuses on the concepts of dreams and fragmented memories. For more information about her work, go to lavouniedoan.com

Spirit of Helen Awards: Niru Bhatia

Announcing the 2022 Spirit of Helen Award Recipient – Niru Bhatia. 

Nominated by Kevin Allen, Niru is “single-minded in her passion for filmmaking and acted as a cultural ambassador for Indian cinema in Calgary. Niru has an astounding can-do attitude and manifested the Hidden Gems Film Festival with much verve and delight.”

AMAAS defines media art as independent artist initiated and controlled use of film, video, new media, audio/sound art and related media.
