Biography
The Boreal Electroacoustic Music Society (BEAMS) is a non-profit society dedicated to the promotion and production of sound oriented experimentation. Its Board of Directors consists of professional musicians, composers and media artists from diverse backgrounds driven to create a voice for sound oriented art in Edmonton, Alberta.

BEAMS has been active since 1989 and in that time has sponsored a regular concert season; produced three cassette and CD compilations concentrating on promoting Albertan and Canadian composers; and sponsored three major festivals - Radio Unbound (1995) and the Edmonton Intermedia Arts Festival and Symposium (1996 and 1998). The diversity of interests of our membership has resulted in a high amount of community involvement in our events. Over the years, this has resulted in collaborative efforts for many events with organizations such as the local campus radio station CJSR, the University of Alberta, Grant MacEwan Community College, Edmonton Composers' Concert Society, Edmonton Art Gallery, Latitude 53 Gallery, the Film and Video Arts Society of Alberta, and Metro Cinema Society.

BEAMS' philosophy is one of inclusion, this has allowed us to explore a wide range of artistic expression through our concerts which have ranged from the edges of Pop oriented music to that of electroacoustics and interactive performance. Artists working in the areas of electroacoustic composition, radio art, improvised performance and computer interactive performance regularly make appearances during our concert season.

BEAMS is intent on fostering local fledgling and established artists through the sponsoring of new original works and by expanding their experience and knowledge through workshops and concerts by Internationally respected artists. In the past, BEAMS has brought several Internationally known artists (many Canadian) such as: Tim Brady (Montreal), Michael Brook (U.K.), Eugene Chadbourne (U.S.), John Oswald (Toronto), Daniel Scheidt (Calgary), Claude Schryer (Montreal), Rose McDowall (U.K.), Bob Wiseman (Toronto), Jeff Greinke (U.S.), Screan (Montreal), Kathy Kennedy (Montreal), Matt Rogalsky (U.K.), Techla Shiphorst (Vancouver), Ken Gregory (Winnipeg), Steve Heimbecker (Montreal); to name just a few.
